The book consists of nine chapters. Chapter 1 contains the basic formulations of shape optimization problems, and describes sensitivity analysis concepts used in optimal design. Chapter 2 presents finite-dimensional optimization with equality and inequality constraints. Newton's algorithms applied to unconstrained and constrained optimization problems are given in chapter 3. Chapter 4 describes optimality conditions for constrained optimization, including interior point algorithms, chapter 5 presents automatic differentiation including computing gradients by finite differences, and chapter 6 presents computing gradients by adjoint states. Some applications of shape optimization to aerodynamics and computing the gradients in aeroelasticity are given in chapter 7. Chapter 8 is devoted to one-shot methods including global algorithms and line search. Finally, chapter 9 concludes the results presented in the monograph. Many illustrative examples and numerical results clarify the presentation. The book will be of interest to graduate students involved in mathematical modeling and simulation, as well as to engineers and researchers in applied mathematics looking for an up-to-date introduction to optimization techniques, sensitivity analysis, and optimal design.
