The authors analyze discretization effects in blow up of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). Examples whose discretization effects in simulations of perturbed NLS equations lead to wrong results are shown. A modified equation of the semi-discrete NLS, which is the NLS with high order anisotropic dispersion, captures the arrest of collapse but not the subsequent oscillations.
