The authors consider the dynamics of a Duffing-type oscillator with parametric and external excitation and an additional fifth-order nonlinearity. Due to the nonlinearity, the level sets for the Hamiltonian of the averaged system display a complicated structure and contain homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. By applying Melnikov's method, the authors prove that the full system possesses transversal homoclinic orbits. Also numerical simulations are provided. Unfortunately, the article isn't written very carefully: The Van der Pol transformation seems to be mistyped; also the ``homoclinic bifurcation curve'' in figures 5 and 6 should be explained. One also would like to know how the Melnikov integrals are computed for the complicated homoclinic orbits.
