An abundant semigroup \(S\) is one in which each \(\mathcal L^*\)- and \(\mathcal R^*\)-class has an idempotent, where \(\mathcal L^*\) and \(\mathcal R^*\) are the generalized Green's relations corresponding to \(\mathcal L\) and \(\mathcal R\). Let \(E\) denote the set of idempotents of \(S\). If, in addition, the idempotents of \(S\) form a semilattice then \(S\) is adequate. In this paper it is proved that an abundant semigroup \(S\) has a multiplicative adequate transversal if and only if \(S\) can be embedded as a so-called *-ideal into an abundant semigroup with a normal medial idempotent \(u\) (meaning \(xux=x\) for all \(x\) in \(E\) and \(u\langle E\rangle u\) is a semilattice). The structure of abundant semigroups is then described in terms of left normal bands, right normal bands, and adequate semigroups satisfying certain compatibility conditions. Special cases then allow recovery of some known results along these lines.
