The paper deals with the system \[ u_t=\Delta u+f(\nabla u,\nabla v),\qquad v_t=\Delta v+g(\nabla u,\nabla v) \] in \({\mathbb R}^n\times {\mathbb R}_+\), where the maximum and minimum principles fail for the solution itself and also for its first derivatives in \(x.\) Assuming that \(f\) and \(g\) present a subquadratic growth near the origin, the authors prove global existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem, and existence of nonnegative solutions. The maximum and minimum principles are replaced by the existence of some invariant regions in \({\mathbb R}^{2n+2}\) for \((u,v, \partial u/\partial x_1,\ldots,\partial v/\partial x_1, \partial u/\partial x_n,\ldots,\partial v/\partial x_n).\)
