The filiform complex Lie algebras of dimension 8 were classified by \textit{J. M. Ancochea-Bermudez} and \textit{M. Goze} [Arch. Math. 50, 511--525 (1988; Zbl 0628.17005)]. In the paper under review, that classification is used in order to describe the following two classes of filiform 8-dimensional Lie algebras: {(a)} the characteristically nilpotent ones (i.e., the ones possessing only nilpotent derivations), and {(b)} the ones having only unipotent automorphisms. The specific descriptions are too complicated to be recalled here. We just mention that each of the above classes (a) and (b) is exhibited as a finite union of Zariski locally closed subsets of the algebraic variety of all filiform 8-dimensional Lie algebras.
