Let \(G\) be an Abelian group with \(p\)-primary part \(G_p\) and \(F\) a field of prime characteristic \(p\). It is shown that for any ordinal \(\alpha\), the \(\alpha\)-th overhang \(A_G^\alpha/A_\alpha^G\) with \(A_G^\alpha=(AG^{p^{\alpha+1}})\cap G^{p^\alpha}[p]\) and \(A_\alpha^G=(A[p]G^{p^{\alpha+1}}[p])\cap G^{p^\alpha}[p]\) of the subgroup \(A\) in \(G\), introduced by \textit{K. Benabdallah, B. Charles}, and \textit{A. Mader} [Can. J. Math. 43, No. 1, 3-18 (1991; Zbl 0729.20021)] is an isomorphism invariant for the pairs of group algebras \((FG,FA)\). In the sense of the above mentioned paper \(A\) is called \(p\)-vertical (strongly \(p\)-vertical) if the \(\alpha\)-th overhang of \(A\) in \(G\) vanishes for every natural number (ordinal) \(\alpha\). Hence verticality is also an isomorphism invariant for pairs of group algebras. Furthermore, the author establishes criteria for certain subgroups in \(FG\) to be (maximal) vertical, and presents open questions, such as the following: if \((FG,FA)\) and \((FH,FB)\) are isomorphic pairs of group algebras then does it follow that the group pairs \((G,A)\) and \((H,B)\) have isometric socles?
