\textit{E. C. Dade} [in Ohio State Univ. Math. Res. Inst. Publ. 6, 45-59 (1997; Zbl 0904.20004)] has formulated far-reaching conjectures concerning the number of irreducible characters of fixed defect in a block of a finite group. One of them is the invariant conjecture. In the paper under review, the author proves this conjecture (invariant conjecture) for the Steinberg triality groups \(G={^3D_4(q)}\) where \(r\) is distinct from the characteristic of the group.
