The authors develop a Wightman-type framework for quantum field theory (QFT) on anti-de Sitter space-time (AdS) and derive a number of general results for interacting fields fitting into that framework. An analogous setting for de Sitter space was proposed by the same authors in [Commun. Math. Phys. 196, 535-570 (1998; Zbl 1060.81542). A different setting, based on algebras of observables but apparently implying the one reviewed here, was given by \textit{D. Buchholz, M. Florig} and \textit{S. J. Summers} [Classical Quantum Gravity 17, L31--L37 (2000; Zbl 0943.83055). A central part of the paper is the formulation of a spectrum condition with respect to one-parameter isometry groups with timelike orbits. As in Minkowski space, there is a natural such condition for the elliptic orbits, implying analyticity of the \(n\)-point correlation functions in ``tuboidal'' domains of the Cartesian product of \(n\) copies of (the covering of) the complexified AdS manifold. This implies Bisognano-Wichmann analyticity in the hyperbolic orbits and thus the ``AdS-Unruh effect'' for these orbits (but not the uniformly accelerated elliptic ones) as first proposed by \textit{S. Deser} and \textit{L. Orit} [Classical Quantum Gravity 14, L163--L168 (1997; Zbl 0884.53059)]. Further topics covered in the paper are the restriction of AdS quantum fields to ``Poincaré branes'' (i.e. the Minkowskian parabolic sections of AdS), an analog of the Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction from ``Euclidean'' AdS QFT, and a complete characterization of the AdS two-point functions for ``pure'' AdS as well as its universal covering.
