In its simplest form, the continuous wavelet transform is linked to harmonic analysis on the three--dimensional connected Heisenberg nilpotent Lie group \(N\) [W. Schempp, Harmonic analysis on the Heisenberg nilpotent Lie group, with applications to signal theory. Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series, Vol. 147, Longman Scientific and Technical, London (1986; Zbl 0632.43001)]. Its applications [W.J. Schempp, Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Mathematical Foundations and Applications. Wiley--Liss, New York, Chichester, Weinheim (1998; Zbl 0930.92015)] depend upon the fact that the irreducible unitary linear representations of \(N\) which are acting on the complex Hilbert space \(L^2({\mathbb R})\) admit a dimension \( > 1\) are square integrable modulo center [C.C. Moore, J.A. Wolf, Square integrable representations of nilpotent groups. Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 185, 445--462 (1974; Zbl 0274.22016)]. The square integrability is equivalent to the Kepplerian second law of planetary motion. The paper under review is concerned with an extension of \(N \cong {\mathbb R}^n \triangleleft {\mathbf T}\) to a semi--direct product of type \(G \cong {\mathbb R}^n \triangleleft H\), where the dilation group \(H\) denotes a closed matrix group [J. Segman, W. Schempp, On the extension of the Heisenberg group to incorporate multiscale resolution. In: Wavelets and their Applications, J.S. Byrnes, J.L. Byrnes, K.A. Hargreaves, and K. Berry, editors, Kluwer Academic Publishers, NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C, Math. Phys. Sci. 442, 347--361 (1994; Zbl 0816.42020)]. The article provides admissibility criteria for subrepresentations of quasi--regular representations of \(G\) on \(L^2\bigl({\mathbb R}^n\bigr)\), and sufficient conditions for the existence of admissible vectors by use of the Plancherel theory [R.S. Laugesen, N. Weaver, G.L. Weiss, E.N. Wilson, A characterization of the higher dimensional groups associated with continuous wavelets. J. Geom. Anal. 12, No. 1, 89--102 (2002; Zbl 1043.42032)]. Unfortunately the paper does not indicate any application to the signal theoretic scenario.
