    The author describes and analyses a class of regularization methods for regularizing unbounded operators that is closely related to the one introduced by \textit{M. Hanke} [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optimization 13, No. 5-6, 523-540 (1992; Zbl 0769.65027)]. Optimality results are then obtained using an a posteriori as well as an a priori parameter choice strategy. It is shown that this approach unifies and simplifies many previous results by, e.g., \textit{G. Vainikko} [Z. Anal. Anwend. 6, 351-362 (1987; Zbl 0632.65061)], \textit{B. A. Mair} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 25, No. 1, 135-147 (1994; Zbl 0819.65141)], and the author [Z. Anal. Anwend. 18, No. 1, 37-46 (1999; Zbl 0969.65042)]. The results by \textit{U. Tautenhahn} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 33, No. 6, 2120-2130 (1996; Zbl 0865.65040)] on error estimates using Hilbert scales also fit into the present framework.
