A study of the suppression of flow-induced vibration is presented making use of a simple control algorithm with an assumption that the disturbance as well as the system parameters are bounded variables. By introducing three different control signals, three schemes are explored, namely, robust control, sliding mode, and adaptive control. The control schemes are implemented numerically with a few illustrative examples. It is shown that all three schemes can be effectively used for systems with bounded disturbances and variable parameters, which often include the added mass and stiffness as well as viscous shear induced by fluid-structure interactions. Various advantages and disadvantages of different control schemes are illustrated. In general, robust control and adaptive control schemes are ultimately uniformly bounded, whereas the sliding mode scheme is asymptotically stable. Thus, as we further reduce the integration time step, the residual of robust control and adaptive control schemes will approach a bounded asymptotic function and the residual of the sliding mode scheme will approach zero.
