The paper under review gives characterizations and classifications of harmonic morphisms with \(1\)-dimensional fibers defined on \(4\)-dimensional Einstein manifolds. Harmonic morphisms are smooth maps between Riemannian manifolds which preserve the Laplace equation and are characterized as harmonic maps which are horizontally conformal. \textit{R. Bryant} characterized harmonic morphisms with \(1\)-dimensional fibers defined on a space form of dimension at least \(4\) [see Commun. Anal. Geom. 8, 219-265 (2000; Zbl 0966.53045)]. The author generalizes Bryant's results on dimension \(4\) in some sense. He proves that on an Einstein \(4\)-manifold, there are precisely three types of harmonic morphisms with \(1\)-dimensional fibers. As applications, the author shows that if \(\varphi : (M^4, g) \to (N^3, h)\) is a surjective submersive harmonic morphism from a complete simply connected Einstein \(4\)-manifold to a space form \(N\), then, up to homotheties, \(\varphi\) is one of the following projections \({\mathbb R}^4 \to {\mathbb R}^3\), \({\mathbb H}^4 \to {\mathbb R}^3\), \(f{\mathbb H}^4 \to {\mathbb H}^3\). In the case when \(M\) is compact, \(M\) and \(N\) must be flat. In particular, there exist no harmonic morphisms with \(1\)-dimensional fibers from a compact Einstein \(4\)-manifold to \(S^3\).
