The author investigates the problem of best restricted range approximation of complex-valued continuous functions defined on a compact Hausdorff space \(Q\) endowed with the uniform norm. Let \(P\) be a finite-dimensional subspace of \(C(Q)\) and \(\Omega=\{\Omega_t:t\in Q\}\) be a system of nonempty convex closed sets in \(\mathbb{C}\). Let \[ P_\Omega=\{p\in P:p(t)\in\Omega_t\;\forall t\in Q\}. \] The problem investigated is to find an element \(p^*\in P_\Omega\), that is called a best (restricted range) approximation for \(f\in C(Q)\) from \(P_\Omega\), such that \[ \| f-p^*\|=\inf_{p\in P_\Omega}\|f-p\|. \] The author presents effecftive criterions for \(p^*\) be a best approximation. The conditions obtained seem like well-known conditions in Kolmogorov's theorem (see, e.g., Ch.~3, \S~2, Th.~2.1 in [\textit{R.~A. DeVore} and \textit{G. G. Lorentz}, Constructive approximation. Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften. 303. Berlin: Springer (1993; Zbl 0797.41016)]). Furthermore, the author investigates the problems of uniqueness and strong uniqueness of the best approximation. For this purpose the author uses the notion of \(n\)-dimensional Haar system in \(C(Q)\) (see, e.g., Ch.~3, \S\S~-4 of the mentioned monograph) as well as the concept of admissible functions defined in [\textit{G. S. Smirnov} and \textit{R. G. Smirnov}, J. Approximation Theory 100, No. 2, 284--303 (1999; Zbl 0935.41021)] The results obtained use convenient geometric conditions on \(\Omega_t\). It makes possible to obtain fairly general statements that extend recent results due to Smirnovs. The article contains an extended bibliography that reflects several results obtained in this area.
