Let \(Y\) and \(E\) be normed spaces and let \(X\) be a convex subset of \(Y\). Denote by \(\mathcal F(X,E)\) the space of all functions from \(X\) to \(E\), by \(\mathcal C(X,E)\) the subspace of continuous functions, and if \(Y\) is a dual space, then denote by \(\mathcal K(X,E)\) the subset of weak\(^*\)-to-norm continuous functions. A linear operator \(L:D(L)\to\mathcal F(X,E)\) where \(D(L)\subseteq\mathcal C(X,E)\) is said to be dominated by a linear operator \(S:D(S)\to\mathcal F(X,\mathbb R)\) if for all \(F\in D(L)\), \(\| F\| \in D(S)\), where \(\| F\| (x):=\| F(x)\| _E\), and \(\| L(f)(x)\leq S(\| F\| )(x)\). Among others the paper contains the following quantitative Korovkin type result (the result is stated for a sequence of operators in the above setting, but it is actually a result for a single operator which may be applied to a sequence). Suppose that \(D(L)\) and \(D(S)\) contain \(UCB(X,E)\)- the space of all uniformly continuous and bounded functions from \(X\) to \(E\), and \(UCB(X,\mathbb R)\)- the space of all uniformly continuous and bounded functions from \(X\) to \(\mathbb R\), respectively, and that, in addition, \(S\) is a positive operator and \(\| \cdot-x\| _X^2\in D(S)\) for some \(x\in X\) (hence for all \(x\in X\)). Then for all \(F\in UCB(X,E)\), \(x\in X\) and \(\delta>0\), \[ \| L(F)(x)-F(x)\| _E\leq\| L(F(x))(x)-F(x)\| _E+\omega(F,\delta)\left[S(1)(x)+\delta^{-2}S(\| \cdot-x\| _X^2)(x)\right], \] where \(\omega(F,\delta):=\sup\{\| F(u)-F(x)\| \mid u,x\in X\,,\| u-x\| \leq\delta\}\). In particular if \(L\) preserves constants, then we are left with the second term and the choice \(\delta^2=S(\| \cdot-x\| _X^2)(x)\) yields the appropriate estimate of the degree of approximation involving the modulus of continuity. Other results involve unbounded functions with controlled growth.
