The variational asymptotic method (VAM) is used to split the 3D elasticity problem into a linear 1D normal line analysis and a nonlinear 2D shell analysis. The transverse normal line is discretized by means of piecewise 4th order polynomials. Minimization of an error term leads to a Reissner-Mindlin model, which is as close as possible to asymptotic correctness. In order to obtain recovery relations, which are valid to the same order as the energy, the VAM iteration is applied once again. Therewith, closed-form expressions for 3D displacement, strain and stress fields are derived in terms of 2D quantities and the normal coordinate. A corresponding development for plates is published by \textit{W. Yu, D. H. Hodges} and \textit{V. V. Volovoi} [Int. J. Solids Struct. 39, No. 20, 5185-5203 (2002; Zbl 1060.74041)].
