This paper offers an alternative approach to information theory with a stress on the coding and information transmission via a channel with uncertainty. In this approach, the uncertainty of the information source and transmission channel is represented rather by possibilistic than probabilistic means. The concepts of possibilistic information measure, possibilistic entropy of a source and possibilistic capacity of a channel are defined and investigated. It can be seen that the possibilistic entropy decreases and the possibilistic capacity increases with the increase of the allowed possibility of error. The general model is interpreted regarding the possibilistic coding and the corresponding distortion measures. One of its applications is discussed.
