On constructing biharmonic maps and metrics (Q1868404)

The authors construct biharmonic nonharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds \(M\) and \(N\). First, a harmonic map \(\varphi: M\rightarrow N\) is constructed. Then deforming the metric conformally on \(M\) the authors obtain a biharmonic map. Using an ordinary differential equation the authors prove that inversion in the unit sphere \(x\rightarrow x/|x|\) is biharmonic nonharmonic in \({\mathbb R}^m\) if and only if \(m=4\).
