Let \(G\) be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\) where \(p=0\) or \(p\geq 7\). If \(p=0\) and \(G\) is exceptional then the finite simple groups projectively embedded in \(G\) are classified (see the survey by \textit{R. L. Griess} jun. and \textit{A. J. E. Ryba} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 36, No. 1, 75-93 (1999; Zbl 0916.22008)]). In this paper, the author is interested in the classification of homomorphisms \(A_5\to G\) up to conjugation by \(G\). When \(G=\text{GL}_n\) this can be reduced to the classification of irreducible representations of \(A_5\) which is classical. In the general case, there is again something analogous to the notion of irreducible representation which the author calls a regular homomorphism \(A_5\to G\), i.e., a homomorphism \(A_5\to G\) whose image is not contained in a Levi subgroup of a proper parabolic subgroup of \(G\). Again the classification of homomorphisms \(A_5\to G\) up to conjugacy can be more or less reduced to the analogous question for regular homomorphisms. \textit{D. D. Frey} [in Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 634 (1998; Zbl 0907.22013), J. Algebra 202, No. 2, 414-454 (1998; Zbl 0908.20036), J. Group Theory 4, No. 3, 277-323 (2001; Zbl 0988.20030)] has classified up to conjugacy the homomorphisms (respectively non-regular homomorphisms) \(A_5\to G\) for \(G\) simply connected of type \(E_6\), \(E_7\) (respectively \(E_8\)) over \(\mathbb{C}\). For \(G\) of type \(E_8\), \textit{A. V. Borovik} [in Algebra Logic 28, No. 3, 163-182 (1989); translation from Algebra Logika 28, No. 3, 249-279 (1989; Zbl 0719.20025), Contemp. Math. 131, Pt. 1, 67-79 (1992; Zbl 0770.20012)] gave an example of a regular homomorphism \(A_5\to G\). In this paper, the author completes the classification up to \(G\)-conjugacy of homomorphisms \(A_5\to G\) for any simply connected \(G\).
