    Given nonempty subsets \(W\) and \(V\) of a normed space \(X\), the first author has introduced [see Mat. Zametki 35, No. 3, 369--380 (1984; Zbl 0561.41022)] the relative \(n\)-width \(d_n(W, V)_X\) of \(W\) with the constraint \(V\). The aim of the present paper is to estimate this relative \(n\)-width in the case when \(X\) is the normed space \(L_q[-1,1]\) \((1\leq q\leq\infty)\), \(W\) is the class \(\Delta^s_+ W^r_p\) (\(r\), \(s\in\mathbb N\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\)) of all functions \(x:[-1,1]\to \mathbb R\) such that \(x^{(r- 1)}\) is absolutely continuous on every closed subinterval of \((-1,1)\), \(\| x^{(r)}\|_{L_p}\leq 1\) and the \(s\)-difference \(\Delta^s_\tau x\) is nonnegative for all \(\tau> 0\), while \(V\) is the class of all functions \(y\in L_q[-1,1]\) such that \(\Delta^s_\tau y\) is nonnegative for all \(\tau> 0\). Under the assumption \(n\geq r\) it is proved that \[ \begin{aligned} d_n(\Delta^s_+ W^r_p, \Delta^s_+ L_q)_{L_q} &\asymp n^{-r+ s+1/p-3}\text{ when }3\leq s\leq r;\\ d_n(\Delta^s_+ W^r_p, \Delta^s_+ L_q)_{L_q} &\asymp n^{-2}\text{ when }s= r+1\text{ and }r\geq 2.\end{aligned} \]
