The paper is part of a general project intended to develop Geometric Measure Theory in metric spaces, in which the notion of perimeter is a keystone. When measures taken into account are associated to some special weight functions, called strong-\(A_\infty\) weights, a notion of perimeter in the sense of De Giorgi is proposed for very general metric spaces. It is also proved that the above perimeter of a measurable subset of \({\mathbb R}^n\) can be approximated in the sense of \(\Gamma\)-convergence by means of degenerate elliptic functionals, in the same order of ideas of the Modica-Mortola approximation result. Suitable weighted BV-spaces are introduced and studied. The equivalence between different notions of perimeter in metric settings with the corresponding Minkowski contents is also proved.
