    Let \(D\) denote the symmetric double Warsaw circle in the plane and \(r: D\to D\) the antipodal rotation of \(D\). The authors show that if \(S\) is a certain type of spiral (which they call simple) limiting on \(D\) in Euclidean 3-space and \(f\) is an extension of \(r\) to \(D\cup S\), then \(f\) has a fixed point. This contrasts with a previous result of the second author [Fundam. Math. 144, 1--9 (1994; Zbl 0809.54030)] who showed that there is a (non-simple) spiral \(P\) limiting on \(D\) in the plane and an embedding \(f:D\cup P\to D\cup P\) extending \(r\) with no fixed point. However, it is further shown here that there is a homeomorphism (necessarily not of period 2) of \(D\) onto itself and a simple spiral \(T\) limiting on \(D\) in the plane which extends to a homeomorphism of \(D\cup T\) into itself which is fixed-point-free. This latter result is used to prove that the uniquely arcwise connected continuum constructed by \textit{W. Holsztyński} [Fundam. Math. 64, 289--312 (1969; Zbl 0185.26802)] does not have the fixed point property.
