A topological space is called totally paracompact by \textit{A. Lelek} [Fundam. Math. 64, 209--218 (1969; Zbl 0175.49603)] if every open base of it has a locally finite subcover. This is a very restrictive property -- the space of irrationals is not totally paracompact. In this paper the author gives a generalization called base-paracompact spaces and studies which paracompact spaces are base-paracompact. It is proved that if \(X\) is paracompact and the countable union of closed base-paracompact sets relative to \(X,\) then \(X\) is base-paracompact; that metric spaces and regular Lindelöf spaces are base-paracompact and many other results shared by paracompact spaces. It is still an open question whether all paracompact spaces are base-paracompact. It has been proved that this question is equivalent to statements like: base-paracompactness is preserved under closed maps; every \(F_\sigma\)-set of a base-paracompact space is base-paracompact and others.
