For \(m\geq3\) integer, one denotes by \(Q_{2m-1}\) the nilpotent complex \(2m\)-dimensional Lie algebra that has a basis \(\{X_1,\dots,X_{2m}\}\) satisfying \([X_1,X_i]=X_{i+1}\) for \(2\leq i\leq 2m-1\), \([X_j,X_{2m+1-j}]=(-1)^jX_{2m}\) for \(2\leq j\leq m\) and \([X_k,X_l]=0\) for the other pairs of indices \((k,l)\). A nilpotent complex \(n\)-dimensional Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) is said to be of type \(Q\) if, denoting \(p=[n/2]\) and \(\{C^k{\mathfrak g}\}_{k\geq0}\) the descending central series (that is, \(C^0{\mathfrak g}={\mathfrak g}\) and \(C^k{\mathfrak g}=[{\mathfrak g},C^{k-1}{\mathfrak g}]\) for \(k\geq1\)) we have \(C^p{\mathfrak g}\neq C^{p+1}{\mathfrak g}=\{0\}\neq[C^q{\mathfrak g},C^q{\mathfrak g}]\) whenever \(1\leq q\leq p-1\) and moreover \({\mathfrak g}\) is isomorphic to the graded Lie algebra associated with the filtration \(C^0{\mathfrak g}\supseteq C^1{\mathfrak g}\supseteq\cdots\). In the paper under review, one basically analyzes a special class of deformations of central extensions of the aforementioned algebras \(Q_{2m-1}\). In effect, the authors develop a method to construct characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras of type \(Q\) in any dimension \(\geq9\). (We recall that a Lie algebra is characteristically nilpotent if all of its derivations are nilpotent.) It is noteworthy that another construction of characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras of arbitrarily high dimensions can be found in a previous paper by the same authors [Algebra Colloq. 9, No.~4, 455--468 (2002; Zbl 1030.17005)].
