This paper considers approximation of the solution of convection-reaction equations in one spatial dimension by means of a combination of: -- discontinuous, piecewise linear finite elements; -- backward differentiation formula 2 implicit-explicit time stepping; low order quadrature rules. A careful study of convergence is developed and special attention is brought to accuracy and stability. Theoretical results are nicely illustrated by pertinent numerical simulations.
