This textbook on block error-correcting codes is designed for a one-semester course geared towards mathematics, computer science, and engineering students at the advanced undergraduate level. The prerequisites include linear algebra, some knowledge on finite fields, and basic facts about probability theory. The author's principle throughout the book is to introduce mathematics only when needed, with emphasis placed on the construction of objects through the use of its associated website. A variety of well-chosen examples illustrate the mathematics presented, which then can be modified and saved by the user. The system there can also be used by students to submit homework electronically and by teachers to test whether the computational implementations run properly; very nice features indeed. The four chapters are on block error-correcting codes, finite fields, cyclic codes, and alternant codes. Each section begins with a relevant quote from such distinguished researchers in the field as MacWilliams or Conway and Sloane. Each section ends with several exercises. An appendix provides information on the WIRIS/cc system of the website. Furthermore, a list of symbols and a glossary are included to aid students in their studies.
