In the general context of the preference structures, the authors give a representation of preferences by interval orders with respect to the relation of indifference, weak preference and strict preference defined on a non-empty and finite set. The elements of such a set are represented by intervals such that two elements are indifferent whenever the interval associated to one of them is included in the corresponding interval of the other, an element is weakly preferred to another iff its interval is ``more to the right'' than the interval of the other and the intervals have non-empty intersection and an element is strictly preferred to another whenever its attached interval satisfies the above first condition, but the intersection of the corresponding intervals is empty. A significant bibliography is included.
