      The author considers ordered type I dual reductive pairs \((G_1, G_2)\) embedded in the corresponding symplectic group \(Sp\) with metaplectic covering \(Sp\). One assumes that \(G_1\) is, in a straightforward sense, smaller than \(G_2\). Let \(\pi\) be a representation of the metaplectic cover of \(G_1\) which is assumed to satisfy the further condition ``to be in the stable range of the theta correspondence''. Then, following \textit{J.-S. Li} [Invent. Math. 97, 237-255 (1989; Zbl 0694.22011)] the author constructs a real bilinear form on \(\omega\otimes\pi\) where \(\omega\) is the oscillator representation of \(Mp\), thereby also on \(\omega(\pi)\). \textit{J.-S. Li} [op. cit.] conjectured that if \(\pi\) is unitary this form should be positive semidefinite, and that consequently, \(\omega (\pi)\) will be unitary. The author proves this conjecture under rather more stringent conditions. These conditions give a large number of examples where Li's conjecture holds. It also allows the author to construct irreducible unitary representations of classical groups of type I.
