Let \(X\) be a normal locally complete intersection in some complex projective space \(\mathbb{P}^n\). If we are interested in the fundamental group \(\pi_1(X)\), we can apply the Zariski general hyperplane section theorem and reduce our problem to the case \(\dim X=2\). An additional hyperplane section will produce a smooth curve \(C=X\cap H\) whose fundamental group is well-known and an epimorphism \(\varepsilon:\pi_1(C) \to\pi_1 (X)\). The author describes the kernel of \(\varepsilon\) in terms of monodromy relations obtained by inserting \(H\) into a general pencil of hyperplanes.
