Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be subsets of Hausdorff topological vector spaces \(E_1\) and \(E_2\), respectively, and \(F:X\to K(Y)\), where \(K(Y)\) denotes the family of non-empty compact subsets of \(Y\). Given two open neighbourhoods \(U\) and \(V\) of the origins in \(E_1\) and \(E_2\), respectively, a \((U,V)\)-approximative continuous selection of \(F:X\to K(Y)\) is a continuous functions \(s:X\to Y\) satisfying \(s(x)\in(F[(x+U) \cap X]+ V)\cap Y\) for every \(x\in X\). We say that \(F:X\to K(Y)\) is approximable if its restriction \(F |_\Omega\) to any compact subset \(\Omega\) of \(X\) admits a \((U, V)\)-approximative continuous selection for every open neighbourhood \(U\) and \(V\) of the origins in \(E_1\) and \(E_2\), respectively. Some new fixed point theorems for approximable maps are obtained in this paper. Homotopy results, via essential maps, are also presented for approximable maps. The results proved here extend and complement results of \textit{H. Ben-El-Mechaiekh}, \textit{S. Chebbi} and \textit{M. Florenzano} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 126, No. 8, 2345--2349 (1998; Zbl 0896.47039)], \textit{H. Ben-El-Mechaiekh} and \textit{P. Deguire} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 170, No. 2, 477--500 (1992; Zbl 0762.54033)], \textit{L.-S. Math., Brno 34, No. 1, 191--197 (1998; Zbl 0914.47054)], and rely only on Brouwer's fixed point theorem.
