The authors start from Quinn's observation [\textit{F. Quinn}, Invent. Math. 72, 267--284 (1983; Zbl 0555.57003)] that the Cannon-Edwards theorem on the double suspension can be extended to generalized homology spheres and prove a similar result on the single suspension of generalized homotopy spheres. Then they give a series of applications of this result to the triangulation theory for topological manifolds.
