In an earlier work [Funct. Anal. Appl. 1, 34--43 (2001; Zbl 1034.43003)] the author assigned to each pair of unitary representations \(T_j: G\to U(H_j)\) of a topological group \(G\) on separable Hilbert spaces a unitary representation on the Hilbert space completion of a certain space \(D_2^0(H_1,H_2)\subseteq L(H_1,H_2)\) of operators, defined with the help of the Dixmier trace. For \(G=\text{PSL}_2({\mathbb R})\) and \(T_1,T_2\) principal series representations on \(L^2({\mathbb T})\) (with \({\mathbb T}\) the unit circle), the subrepresentation on the closure of the set of pseudodifferential operators (PsDOs) was analyzed in some detail. Motivated by the fact that PsDOs on \(L^2({\mathbb T})\) are determined by their kernels, which are distributions on \({\mathbb T}\times {\mathbb T}\) with singularities on the diagonal, the author now considers a group \(G\) acting on a Riemannian manifold \(X\) and leaving a submanifold \(Y\) (of codimension \(m\)) invariant; his object of study is the corresponding representation of \(G\) on the space \(D(X,Y)\) of distributions on \(X\) that are \(C^\infty\) on \(X\setminus Y\) (depending on a complex parameter \(\rho\) which determines the underlying space of densities), and subrepresentations thereof. For \(\alpha \in {\mathbb R}\), the author specifies an invariant subspace \(F^\alpha(X,Y)\subseteq D(X,Y)\) of distributions that locally are oscillating integrals for a specified class of symbols, close to each point of \(Y\). For \(\alpha=\text{Re}(\rho)=-m/2\), he then outlines the construction of a unitary representation of \(G\) on a Hilbert space completion of \(F^{-m/2}(X,Y)/F^{-m/2-1}(X,Y)\). The relevant inner product is obtained by pulling back an inner product on the corresponding space of symbols along the symbol map. The inner product of symbols is defined by a formula clearly stimulated by the definition of Dixmier traces.
