Let \(D\) be a doubly connected domain in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) with the boundary \(\partial D\) consisting of two disjoint closed curves \(\Gamma_0\) and \(\Gamma_1\) such that \(\Gamma_0\) is contained in the interior of \(\Gamma_1\). For given functions \(f, g\) on \(\Gamma_1\) the author considers the inverse problem of determining \(\Gamma_0\) from the equations \(\Delta u = 0\) in \(D\), \(u =0\) on \(\Gamma_0, u = f\) on \(\Gamma_1\) and \(\partial u/\partial \nu = g\) on \(\Gamma_1\). In the first part of the paper the author surveys the main ideas of some reconstruction procedures that have been used for the numerical solution of this nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem. In the second part he outlines a recently developed method that is based on conformal mapping techniques. Some numerical examples are illustrated to show the feasibility of the method.
