The author proves a Riemann-Roch theorem for triangulated categories with Serre duality. This result is then applied to the study of noncommutative Cohen-Macaulay surfaces. The details are too technical to be briefly captured in this review. However, the technicalities are very carefully introduced and explained by the author. A patient reader will certainly benefit from reading this paper, at least in learning useful techniques. In that aspect, the paper is written better (!) than any textbook on commutative algebraic geometry that the reviewer has seen, as the given definitions are introduced in a general algebraic context and thus do not require the reader to struggle with the idiosyncratic language of the classical geometry. Reviewer's remark: Whether the reader will have, upon reading the paper, a better conceptual understanding of noncommutative algebraic geometry remains to be seen. This is not the author's fault, but rather a result of an unfortunate climate in today's noncommutative geometry, a discipline unduly burdened by connections with its commutative relative. Those connections impose unnecessary restrictions and narrow the scope of new results. However, such gripes should be addressed elsewhere. In the meantime, the reader is, once again, encouraged to read the paper.
