The author considers a class of real reductive Lie groups, for which the role of the Iwasawa \(K\)-component is played by a non-compact group \(K\) containing a finitely generated central discrete subgroup \(\Gamma\), such that \(K/\Gamma\) is compact. This class of groups includes all connected semisimple Lie groups with infinite center. For such groups, orbital integrals are obtained by a limiting procedure of corresponding orbital integrals of quotient groups from the Harish-Chandra class. This limiting technique is developed in a more general context of a unimodular group with a sequence of central discrete subgroups. As an application, the explicit Plancherel formula for the above class of groups is obtained. For other methods of deriving the Plancherel formula in this generality see the papers by \textit{R. Herb} and \textit{J. A. Wolf} [Compos. Math. 57, 271--355 (1986; Zbl 0587.22005)] and by \textit{M. Duflo} and \textit{M. Vergne} [Representations of Lie groups: analysis on homogeneous spaces and representations of Lie groups, Proc. Symp., Kyoto/Jap. and Hiroshima/Jap. 1986, Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 14, 289--336 (1988; Zbl 0759.22017)].
