The authors extend the algebra-geometric approach to vertex algebras, introduced in [\textit{E. Frenkel} and \textit{D. Ben-Zvi}, Vertex algebras and algebraic curves, Profidence: Am. Math. Soc. (2001; Zbl 0981.17022)], to the study of the so-called twisted modules over vertex algebras, i.e. modules, obtained via twisting with respect to an algebra automorphism. Let \(C\) be a smooth projective curve and \(H\subset\text{Aut}(C)\) a finite group of automorphism, such that the stabilizer of the action of \(H\) at a generic point consists of the identity element. Assume that \(H\) acts by conformal automorphisms on some conformal vertex algebra \(V\). It is shown that in this case the vector bundle \(\mathcal{V}_C\) acquires an \(H\)-equivariant structure, lifting the action of \(H\) on \(C\). Further, a suitable collection of twisted \(V\)-modules gives rise to a section of a certain sheaf on the quotient curve \(X=C/H\). Using this structure the authors define the space of conformal blocks in the twisted settings. Two equivalent definitions are given: using the action of a certain Lie algebra obtained from Fourier coefficients of the vertex operators, and using an analytic continuation. In the case of Heisenberg and affine Kac-Moody vertex algebras this definition may be simplified using twisted versions of the Heisenberg and the affine Lie algebras respectively. Finally, the authors explain the connection with the chiral algebra formalism, in particular, they interpret the twisted modules and the space of conformal blocks in the chiral algebra settings.
