For \(G\) a locally compact group and \(1<p<A\) let \(PM_{p}(G)\) and \(PF_{p}(G)\) be the closure of \(L_P(G)\), considered as an algebra of convolution operators on \(L_{p}(G)\) with respect to the weak operator topology and the norm topology, respectively, in the algebra of all bounded linear operators on \(L_{p}(G)\). The aim of this paper is to characterize compact and weakly compact elements of the algebras \(PM_{p}(G)\) and \(PF_{p}(G)\). The results generalize the classical ones of \textit{S. Sakai} [Pac. J. Math. 14, 659--664 (1964; Zbl 0135.35803)] and \textit{C. Akemann} [Pac. J. Math. 22, 1--8 (1967; Zbl 0158.14205)] concerning the weakly compact and compact elements of \(L_P(G)\).
