The author claims a new algebraic characterization of the hierarchy of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (as given for example in the well-known paper of \textit{M. J. Ablowitz, D. J. Kaup, A. C. Newell} and \textit{H. Segur} [Studies Appl. Math. 53, 249--315 (1974; Zbl 0408.35068)], although this reference is not given here). This then follows in the same line as the author's previous papers, e.g., for Korteweg-de Vries and modified Korteweg-de Vries [Duke Math. J. 108, 251--294 (2001; Zbl 1028.37040)] and [in Sun-Yung Alice Chang (ed.) et al., Lectures on partial differential equations, Proceedings of the conference, Hsinchu, Taiwan, September 2000 in honor of Louis Nirenberg's 75th birthday, Somerville, MA: International Press, New Stud. Adv. Math. 2, 193--215 (2003; Zbl 1167.35487)], and for sine-Gordon [Ark. Mat. 42, 173--203 (2004; Zbl 1060.37060)]. The interested reader is also referred to the author [Ferruiccio Colombini (ed.) et al., Hyperbolic problems and related topics, Proceedings of the conference, Cortona, Italy, September 10--14, 2002, Somerville, MA: International Press. Grad. Ser. Anal., 365--408 (2003; Zbl 1187.37100)]. It is also worth pointing out that in the first of the above papers, the Weiss-Tabor-Carnevale Painlevé test featured strongly; see [\textit{N. A. Kudryashov} and \textit{A. Pickering}, J. Phys. A, Math. Gen. 31, 9505--9518 (1998; Zbl 0985.37073)], and references therein.
