The investigations of \textit{W. Ambrose} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 57, 364--386 (1945; Zbl 0060.26906)] on complex \(H^*\)-algebras (complex associative *-algebras with an underlying Hilbert space structure were generalized into two directions: (i) in [\textit{P. J. Xavier}, ``Complex Krein \(H^*\)-algebras'', to appear in J. Univ. Madras], the underlying Hilbert space structure was generalized to that of a Krein space, leading to Krein \(H^*\)-algebras (\(KH^*\)-algebras), and (ii) the complex *-algebras were extended to real sets in [\textit{I. Kaplansky}, Ann. Math. 49, 689--701 (1948; Zbl 0031.34401)]. The paper under review is aimed at the study of both real and complex \(KH^*\)-algebras. Along these lines, the decomposition of semisimple into simple \(KH^*\)-algebras and the increasing union theorems are obtained. Furthermore, three models of real simple \(KH^*\)-algebras and one model of complex \(KH^*\)-algebras are analysed in detail.
