The 2-microlocal spaces \(C^{s,s'}_{x_0}\) were introduced by \textit{J.-M. Bony} in [Hyperbolic equations and related topics, Proc. Taniguchi Int. Symp., Katata and Kyoto/Jap. 1984, 11--49 (1986; Zbl 0669.35073)]. In [J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 8, No. 4, 319--334 (2002; Zbl 1039.42034)], \textit{K. M. Kolwankar} and \textit{J. Lévy Véhel} introduced the spaces \(K^{s,s'}_{x_0}\) for \(0 < s+s' < 1\), \(s <1\) through simple conditions on the pointwise values of a real function \(f\). This is sometimes advantageous, from a numerical point of view, over a definition by a Littlewood--Paley or wavelet analysis since, instead of losing information by integrating (and therefore smoothing) sampled data, every single point value is used. The main goals of this article are to extend the definition of the \(K^{s,s'}_{x_0}\) spaces to the case \(s+s' \geq 0\), \(s'\leq 0\), and to prove the equality \(C^{s,s'}_{x_0}=K^{s,s'}_{x_0}\) when \(s+s' \notin N\) and \(s'<0\). These restrictions correspond to the case of real--valued functions. This paper only contains the proof when \(s+s' \leq 0\) and \(s < 1\). For the more general case, the reader is referred to [Technical Report RR-4545 INRIA (2002)]. Using this equality, the authors present an algorithm to estimate the 2-microlocal frontier of a continuous function.
