The article investigates a two-dimensional delay differential equation (DDE) that models regenerative chattering in twist drills. The model was derived by \textit{E. Stone} and \textit{A. Askari} [Dyn. Syst. 17, 65--85 (2002; Zbl 1095.70011)]. The delay in the model equations occurs because the cutting force depends on the surface of the workpiece which has been generated by the position of the cutter one revolution ago. The centerpiece of the article is a study of the Hopf bifurcations in the two-parameter plane spanned by the nondimensionalized average cutting force and the spindle speed. The location of the Hopf bifurcation is determined by solving the characteristic equation of the equations linearized at the equilibrium. The nonlinear stability (criticality) of the Hopf bifurcation is computed by constructing a two-dimensional centre manifold employing an algorithm developed by \textit{S. A. Campbell} and \textit{J. BĂ©lair} [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 54, 1402--1424 (1994; Zbl 0809.34077)]. The article covers the cases of vertical and axial-torsional vibrations, thus giving an overview of the nonlinear behavior of DDE models for chattering close to their stability borders.
