    Two orbits (representing bottoms of wells in a stored energy) SO\((n)\) and SO\((n)H\) in the space of matrices \(\mathbb R^{n\times n}\), with \(H=\,\)diag\((\lambda_1,\dots,\lambda_n)\), are considered and assumed to be strongly incompatible, i.e.,~\(\sum_{i=1}^m(1-\lambda_i)(1-\)det\(H/\lambda_i)>0\). Considering \(\Omega\) a Lipschitz domain, existence of a constant \(C=C(\Omega,H)\) is shown such that, for each \(u\in W^{1,2}(\Omega;\mathbb R^n)\), there is \(R=R(u,\Omega)\in\)SO\((n)\cup\)SO\((n)H\) satisfying the following estimate \[ \| \nabla u-R\| _{L^2(\Omega;\mathbb R^{n\times n})} \leq C\| \text{dist}(\nabla u,K)\| _{L^2(\Omega;\mathbb R^{n\times n})}. \]
