Designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, this book is also suitable as a reference for advanced students in data analysis and probability theory. It is logically organized into twenty one chapters and full of problems that detail every step, making it exceptionally well adapted for self study as well as for course use. Chapters 2 through 6 discuss data, types of data analysis, standard deviation, correlation, correlation coefficient, etc. Linear regression analysis is considered in Chapter 7. Chapters 8 through 17 provide an overview of basic concepts -- probability, distributions, estimation, testing, sampling. Several distributions (uniform, binomial, Bernoulli, normal, etc.) are discussed and illustrated. Chapters 18 through 21 discuss the process of modeling a continuous response variable as a linear function of more predictor variables. For example, multivariate data analysis and discriminant analysis are presented and illustrated. Chapter 21 is concerned with hierarchical clustering methods: agglomerative and divisive. This book provides a wide-ranging and entertaining introduction to data analysis, probability and random processes and many of their practical applications. Many important random processes are developed in the text through informative real-life examples. Moreover, there are exercises with solutions at all ability levels, the majority being of elementary or intermediate standard.
