    The authors consider the following two problems: Problem 1: Let \(\| x\|\) (for \(x\in\mathbb{R}\)) be the distance to the nearest integer and \(u:[-1, 1]\to [-1,1]\) be a measurable function such that \[ \| u(t_1+ t_2)- u(t_1)- u(t_2)\|\leq \varepsilon\quad\text{for }t_1,t_2,t_1+ t_2\in [-1,1].\tag{1} \] Is it true that then \[ \| u(t)- u(1) t\|\leq 3\varepsilon\quad\text{for }t\in [-1,1]?\tag{2} \] Does (2) hold with a certain constant in the place of 3? (1) may be written in the form \[ u(t_1+ t_2)- u(t_1)- u(t_2)\in \mathbb{Z}+ [-\varepsilon, \varepsilon]\quad\text{for }t_1,t_2,t_1+ t_2\in [-1,1].\tag{3} \] Problem 2: Does there exist a constant \(K\geq 0\) such that for every \(\varepsilon\geq 0\) and every measurable function \(u: [-1,1]\to \mathbb{R}\), satisfying (3), there exists a constant \(c\in\mathbb{R}\) such that \[ u(t)- ct\in \mathbb{Z}+ [-K\varepsilon, K\varepsilon]\quad\text{for }t\in [-1,1]? \] The answer to Problem 1 is negative and to Problem 2 for `small' \(\varepsilon\) the answer is affirmative. Theorem: Let \(S\) be a real interval with \(0\in S\), \(\varepsilon\in ]0,{1\over 4}[\) and \(h: S\to \mathbb{R}\) be a Lebesgue or Baire measurable function satisfying \[ h(x+ y)- h(x)- h(y)\in \mathbb{Z}+ [-\varepsilon,\varepsilon]\quad\text{for }x,y\in S\quad\text{with }x+ y\in S. \] Then there exists \(c\in \mathbb{R}\) such that \[ h(x)- cx\in \mathbb{Z}+ [-\varepsilon, \varepsilon]\quad\text{for }x\in S. \]
