The pulsed electromagnetic field radiation from a vertical magnetic dipole above an evaporation duct is investigated theoretically. The duct model used is that of Kahan and Eckart and consists of a discontinuous drop of the otherwise constant relative permittivity at the upper duct boundary. The earth is assumed to be plane and an ideal conductor. The aim of the work is to extend the steady-state to transient excitation when no restrictions on the distance between receiving and transmitting ends are made. Two integral transforms are applied to analyze the transient field of a vertical electric dipole above a dielectric layer. A Laplace transform in time and a two-dimensional Fourier transform in horizontal coordinates in space are used. The integral is estimated by using the steepest descend method, along the contour and around the branch-cuts and evaluated by the Residue and Saddle point methods. A disadvantage of the method is that it cannot be used to calculate the potential in the dielectric half-space outside the layer in a similar manner.
