Following the results of Allan Clark, published in 1963, about the \(\pi_3\) of finite H-spaces, it has been conjectured that any finite loop space is rationally equivalent to some compact Lie group. In 1973, J. R. Ewin verified this conjecture for finite loop spaces of rank \(\leq 5\). In 1980, Adams and Wilkerson have established strong restrictions on the type of a finite loop space but provide a specific example of type which cannot be eliminated. In this paper, the authors resolve this conjecture in the negative by exhibiting a concrete finite loop space of rank 66 whose rational cohomology does not agree with that of any Lie group. Moreover, using a computer they also prove that the conjecture is true for finite loop spaces of rank less than 66.
