It is conjectured that any Hopf algebra of dimension \(pq\) over the field of complex numbers, where \(p\) and \(q\) are distinct prime numbers, is semisimple and therefore isomorphic to a group algebra or to a dual group algebra. In this paper the authors contribute to this problem by proving the conjecture in the case where \(p\) and \(q\) are odd prime numbers such that \(p<q\leq 2p+1\). Proofs of the conjecture in other special cases have been given in the Ph.D. Thesis of \textit{R. Williams}, and in the papers [Tsukuba J. Math. 25, No. 1, 187-201 (2001; Zbl 0998.16026)] by \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch} and the reviewer, [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 34, No. 3, 301-307 (2002; Zbl 1042.16027)] by the reviewer, [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 69, No. 1, 65-78 (2004; Zbl 1060.16034)] by \textit{M. Beattie} and \textit{S. Dăscălescu}, and [J. Algebra 276, No. 1, 399-406 (2004; Zbl 1057.16031)] by \textit{S.-H. Ng}. A more general form of the \(pq\)-conjecture involves Hopf algebras whose dimension is square free and has been formulated in the paper [``About finite dimensional Hopf algebras'', in: Quantum symmetries in theoretical physics and mathematics. Proceedings of the Bariloche school, Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina, January 10-21, 2000, Contemp. Math. 294, 1-57 (2002)] by \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch}.
