The finite element spaces with the nonconforming \(P_1\) element are not nested. The transfer operators between consecutive levels use interpolation by weighted mean values. If an error of higher order by the transfer is wanted, negative weights are often encountered. In this paper the volume of the elements enter into the weights. Also negative weights are avoided in view of nonlinear problems.
