The author develops a rigorous asymptotic method for investigating systems containing discontinuous nonlinearities. The first step of this method is the regularization of a static nonlinear element when it is replaced by a dynamic element with smooth characteristic. It allows him to state the existence of a solution in the classical sense, and to use the averaging method. The main idea of regularization is the exchange of a discontinuous characteristic \(v(\sigma)=\Phi(\sigma)\text{sgn\,}\sigma\), where \(v(\sigma)\) is an odd (for simplicity) function, \(\Phi(\sigma)\) a continuously differentiable even positive function, by the dynamic model: \(\mu{dz\over dt}= \sigma- f(\sigma)z\), where \(f(\sigma)= {|\sigma|\over\Phi(\sigma)}\), \(\mu\) is a small parameter. For \(\mu= 0\), the variable \(z\) coincides with \(v(\sigma)\) for \(\sigma\neq 0\). The solution is obtained by a Volosov type averaging method. The estimation of such a solution may be performed by means of traditional recipes of nonlinear mechanics because the nonlinearity is smooth now. The authors consider dry friction systems, which is a traditional topic of nonlinear mechanics. This paper is a significant scientific achievement. Remarks: Instead of \(\psi\) there must be \(w\) in the term \([\overline\sigma+ \psi(\tau- t)]\). On p. 1105 there must be\dots averaged system (8).
