For an analytic self-map \(\varphi\) of the unit disk \(D\), one can consider forward iterates (self-compositions of \(\varphi)\) and backward interates (self-compositions of \(\varphi^{-1})\). The dynamics of forward iterates has been well studied, with the Denjoy-Wolff theorem as the main tool. Backward iteration sequences behave much differently, mainly because a point could have infinitely many preimages or none. This paper studies backward iteration sequences under the additional assumption that preimages are chosen that are at finite (or bounded) hyperbolic distance each time.
